Assaults on Police Grew 224% in Last 5 Years

MADISON—Each year, law enforcement agencies in Wisconsin report the number of officers assaulted in the line of duty. According to new preliminary statistics from the Office of Justice Assistance, 1,588 Wisconsin officers were assaulted in 2010. Part of a growing trend, the 2010 statistics represent an astonishing increase of 224% over the 492 assaults recorded in 2005. In response to this troubling news, WPPA Executive Director Jim Palmer called on lawmakers to immediately convene a commission to study and address this phenomenon.

A fun handgun shooting event to help raise money for charity. All proceeds will be donated to the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Wisconsin.

Andrea Rose Garcia was killed in a tragic automobile crash on May 15, 2009. Andrea volunteered at fundraising events for Special Olympics. *Please visit for more information about Andrea.

Bill to Provide Health Insurance for Spouses and Dependents of Law Enforcement Officers Killed in Action is Approved by the State Senate

On May 17, legislation to provide health insurance coverage for spouses of law enforcement officers who are killed in the line of duty was passed by the State Senate.

Though infrequent, some officers make the ultimate sacrifice in their efforts to keep us safe. Most recently, Fond du Lac police officer Craig Birkholz paid the ultimate sacrifice on March 20. In the wakes of these tragedies, a family can be left to grieve and to fend for themselves to cover their health insurance needs that are no longer provided to them.
