On Thursday, December 16, WPPA Executive Director Jim Palmer appeared on the Wisconsin Radio Network to talk about the tremendous increase in the numbers of assaults on law enforcement officers and officer-involved shootings statewide. The Wisconsin Radio Network has 74 stations across the state affiliated with its news service.
According to the Office of Justice Assistance, the number of assaults on law enforcement officers in 2009 was 180% greater than in 2005. During that same period, the number of sworn officers employed in Wisconsin was relatively unchanged, failing to keep pace with the state’s population growth. Additionally, in 2010 alone, the WPPA has assisted its members in more than 23 critical incidents, smashing a record high of seven set in 2006.
The Wisconsin Radio Network story on the increasingly dangerous environment confronting Wisconsin’s law enforcement community follows similar news coverage by Wisconsin Public Radio and WISC-TV in Madison.
